Dr. Abbi (Sunner) Rickelman
Dr. Abbi (Sunner) Rickelman grew up in Ankeny, IA with her parents, Gregg and Audrey Sunner, and sister Kelli. At a young age she was an avid athlete and as high school approached she became most loyal to her favorite sport, golf. Her hard work paid off as she claimed two team girl's state championship crowns and an individual state championship in 2006. This led to her attending Kansas State University, where she played on the Kansas State women's golf team from 2006-2010 and received her Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences. Throughout her high school and college years, she was also very active in numerous church, community, and leadership groups including Christian Challenge, Silver Key service group, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, volunteering at homeless shelters, helping serve at Salvation Army, attending and serving on numerous mission trips, a member of Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Kansas State women's golf team captain 2008-2010, and mentoring at risk children.
After graduating from Kansas State University, Dr. Abbi attended Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, MO where she graduated valedictorian of her class. She also received her Master's degree in Sports Science and Rehabilitation congruently with her Doctorate of Chiropractic Medicine. At Logan, Dr. Abbi completed 4,200 hours of course work in the areas of physical examination, diagnostic sciences, diagnostic imaging, and conservative manual medicine. While this was the base of her education, her true love was in chiropractic sports medicine with management of sports and non-sport related injuries. While attending chiropractic school, Dr. Abbi was the president of the Logan chapter of Motion Palpation Institute (MPI) and attended over 250 hours of MPI continuing education courses. Additionally she received further training in Dynamic Neuromuscular Rehabilitation, McKenzie Diagnostic Technique, Active Release Technique, assessment and management of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), kinesiology taping, and several other active rehabilitation courses. Dr. Abbi was an intern with Logan's Biofreeze Sports Performance Clinic and had the opportunity to treat athletes in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico at the Pan American Olympic Games, University of Missouri student-athletes, Lindenwood University student-athletes, and attended/treated at countless local sporting events/races. Dr. Abbi also has special interest in nutrition and lifestyle that was sparked by her diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes and Celiac Disease. Since her diagnosis, she dove eagerly into researching for more understanding of why our culture is plagued with chronic disease and illness, not only for her own sake, but to help change the lives of her patients.
After graduating from chiropractic school, she moved to North Carolina with her husband, Dr. Aaron, where they lived and practiced. Though they enjoyed their time exploring the east coast, they felt themselves being pulled back to the Midwest. Here they have opened Designed 2 Move to serve the Ankeny community. Dr. Abbi enjoys being back in her home town and is an active member of the Ankeny Rotary Club, Ankeny Chamber of Commerce, a board member for Ankeny Young Professionals, North Ankeny Crossfit, Cornerstone Church of Ankeny, and a volunteer assistant coach for the Ankeny Centennial girls golf teams.
Since Dr. Abbi was a child she dreamed of one day becoming a professional golfer. As she approached college she felt herself being pulled in a different direction. Her dreams and aspirations became very clear to her; her calling in life was to help people and make a positive footprint on as many lives as possible. In knowing this, she has devoted her life to change the lives of others via manual medicine. She is never satisfied with her knowledge base and is always yearning to learn more for the benefit of her patients. Dr. Abbi is patient focused and will continue to learn and to treat with cutting edge, evidence based treatments that are in the best interest of her patients.
